and “has a large part it can play in the uniting and building of our nation to its true potential.”
The workshop brought together representatives from Fiji’s National Federations in order to discuss and plan the short and medium term goals of Team Fiji – including the Commonwealth Games should Fiji’s appeal to the Court of Arbitration of Sports be successful, this year’s Youth Olympic Games, the Pacific Games 2011, through to the Rio Olympic Games in 2016.
In urging Team Fiji, to move forward together, Ratu Epeli expressed how Team Fiji holds the power to unite the nation:
“As a nation, we are searching for our true potential, just as Team Fiji seeks to develop the country’s natural talents to their maximum potential.
“The two are not unrelated. As a sports loving nation, people of all athletic ability look up to their sporting heroes, who are leaders and role models in the community.
“Team Fiji, which encompasses all these role models therefore has a large part it can play in the uniting and building of our nation to its true potential.”
FASANOC used the large gathering as an opportunity to present a number 60th Anniversary awards, which recognise 60 athletes and administrators who contributed to Fiji sports in FASANOC’s first 60 years. In a surprise to the President, he was called upon to accept one of the awards on behalf of his father, Ratu Sir Edward Cakobau, before being asked to present a number of the awards to others in attendance at the workshop.
The President also presented Makarita Lenoa with her Commonwealth Sports Award for “Administrator of the Year”.
