Officiating at the event, the Ambassador of Japan H.E. Yutaka Yoshizawa said the foot-crossing was constructed using a Japanese technique called the Caisson Method.
"The strength of the bridge was tested recently during Tropical Cyclone Mick with sign of no major damages sustained during the recent flood. This bridge will not only remain intact for many years, but will provide a link between Tavuya and other villages," the Ambassador said.
H.E. Mr Yoshizawa noted that the Japanese Government offers financial assistance scheme for development projects designed to meet the diverse needs of grassroots communities in developing countries.
The newly rehabilitated foot-crossing project would ensure the safety of children crossing the river daily to attend school and ease the burden on villagers attending to their daily activities.
From April 2008 to March 2009, Japan has provided assistance for 14 projects under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) and among these 14 projects, the Tavuya assistance is the last to be completed and handed over successfully.
