The Fiji Taxi Union have asked for a further increase in taxi fares, but have declined to reveal details only they have written to the Land Transport Authority.
Fiji Taxi Union General Secretary Rishi Ram said revealing anything could jeopardise their proposal.
The Ministry of Transport has been asked to consider a proposal for an increase in taxi fares by LTA Chairman Gregory Robert Lawlor.
Mr Lawlor said the increased costs of maintaining and operating a taxi business must be taken into account as prices of spare parts, tyres, fuel and overall maintenance has increased.
He also confirmed that as per the directive of the Prime Minister, the LTA is also reviewing its current fee and charges and the matter will also be taken to the Ministry soon.
However, Mr Lawlor stressed that such policy matters can only be amended and approved through legislative changes and the final decision lies with the government.
The Prime Minister had directed that the LTA stop thinking that it is a money making machine and to consider reviewing its fee structure.
