Students targetted over reproductive and drug issues

The National Substance Abuse Advisory Council of the Ministry of Education is conducting The Peer Education Training workshops for secondary school students.

The four days training allows students to gain and in-depth knowledge on reproductive health issues, HIV and AIDS and Drugs and Substance Abuse.

A ratio of four students per school is expected to attend. The first and second day training for the Central Eastern schools had started on the 27th of February and 1st March 2010.

This training is targeting 28 schools whereby 15 schools in the Suva Education District will attend the training at the Suva Grammar Hall and 13 schools in the Nasinu Nausori corridor will be attending training at the Nasinu Secondary school.

The Northern Peer Education Training is targeting 13 schools and the training will be held at the Boys Scouts Hall on the 6th, , 13th , 20th and 22nd March.

The 2004 Repeat Survey has covered 10 out of 29 secondary schools in February. These included the Ba Tavua Education District, Lautoka Yasawa Education District, Nausori Education District and the Nadroga Navosa Education District.

Last week, schools in the Eastern Education District, Kadavu, will be covered.

NSAAC has developed two simple evaluation forms, namely the Good News Story Form and the Fiji STAHS and Drugs School Broadcast Airing Time Evaluation.

The purpose of these forms is to capture the impact of NSAAC activities in schools that is, steps taken to minimize substance use by students.

These forms will be implemented during the TOT training in all three centres that is Labasa, Savusavu and Taveuni.
