Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama has reiterated that Government is committed to improving service delivery to the people of Fiji, in particular the water supply.
“Water Authority of Fiji is undertaking emergency works to improve supply to areas suffering from intermittent water supply,” Mr Bainimarama said.
He said as a result of the emergency works there are 16 villages in the Rewa Delta, which now can receive water in their homes.
“For 15 years these people suffered from intermittent to no water supply. This has now changed," he said.
“10 days ago, two new water pipes were laid 500 meters across the Rewa River. The pipes run from Lokia to Nailili. At cost of $132,000, the project took a month to complete and involved navy divers who anchored the two new pipes to the river bottom with 50 pairs of 400kg blocks."
The 16 villages include: Nasigatoka, Drekena, Nabua, Nadoi, Vunuku, Muanaira, Muanaicake, Tavuya, Nukui, Nasali, Nukutuba, Waivou, Burebasaga, Nasilai, Vanua Levu and Narocivo.
Mr Bainimarama said unlike in the past the villages can now enjoy normal water supply and even the double storey buildings are now able to get water at the top floor.
The Water Authority of Fiji, he said will continue with its emergency works programme and the people living in affected areas can expect to see improvements in their water supply, as these works are completed.
