In light of global issues and challenges that women face throughout the world, the Delegation of the European Union for the Pacific launched the international drawing competition on gender equality.
It coincides with the celebration of International Women's Day on Monday 8th March. The purpose of the contest is to encourage children between the ages of eight and 10 to express their views on gender equality.
Launching the competition at the Suva City Carnegie Library today, Head of the EU Delegation for the Pacific Ambassador Wiepke van der Goot said the competition is intended to encourage Pacific children to express their ideas so their vision of gender equality receives an international audience and depict how women and men can collabrate to make the world a better place.
'We at the European Union hope and trust that the children participants, irrespective whether they live in Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and Pacific, all share the same belief, namely that women have the ability to do whatever men can do and that they deserve the same level of recognition of their work, the same rights and the same
political representation as men," Mr van der Goot said.
The Ambassador said the EU is taking action to eliminate discrimination and achieve gender equality in Europe and beyond and that education is a key element in reaching this objective.
The closing date for the international drawing competition on gender equality is May 14th.
