International School Suva offers worldwide recognized curriculum which include the International Baccalaureate Programmes for Primary, Middle and Senior school studies. It offers the University of Cambridge International Examinations (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) and the Australian Capital Territory (A.C.T.) Year 12 Certificate.
The IB Primary Years Programme is developed for ages 3 to 12. It addresses the social, physical, emotional and cultural well being of the developing child and establishes a foundation for life long learning. The programme encourages a positive attitude to learning through the development of skills, attitudes, actions and knowledge acquisition expressed in the student learning outcomes. These require the students to become excellent inquirers, communicators and risk-takers, as well as caring, balanced, reflective, skillful, open-minded, knowledgeable and principled young people.
The IB Middle Years Programme is a course of study designed to meet the educational requirements of students aged 11 to 16, who are enrolled in Years 6 – 10. Its philosophy and methodology specifically suit students in the middle years and it provides a natural progression from Primary school through to the International Baccalaureate Diploma at senior secondary level. At International School Suva, the basis for the MYP curriculum is the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) conducted by the University of Cambridge International Examinations Centre. The IGCSE is offered in over 124 countries worldwide. It is an internationally recognized qualification for 14 to 16 year olds. The IGCSE provides a wide curriculum specifically catering to the needs of an international community with an assessment system appropriate for students of all abilities. It is a two year programme leading to a Certificate, which is internationally recognized. In order for students to be awarded the IGCSE Certificate, students must take the final examinations that are externally set and graded.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a rigorous pre-university course for students between the ages of 16 and 19 years. The IB Diploma is offered in the final two years of high school. The focus of the programme is the education of the whole person, encouraging and facilitating the development of individuals who are able to act responsibly in all aspects of life within a complex global society. To that end, its educational philosophy is based on the combination of the principles of: Enquiry-based learning, Academic rigour and Critical thinking. Students take six subjects: First Language (e.g. English, Chinese, Russian or Korean), a Second modern Language, History, Geography, Business Management, IT; Physics, Chemistry, Biology; Mathematics, Arts or Electives. Other requirements of the IB Diploma are: Theory of Knowledge - which is an inter-disciplinary course that encourages students to critically reflect on knowledge gained inside and outside the classroom, a Creativity, Action and Service programme, an Extended Essay which requires students to do some original research and to write a 4000 word essay of the student’s own choice.
Students in Years 11 and 12 may also qualify for the Australian Capital Territory (A.C.T.) Year 12 Certificate. With an appropriate choice of subjects and completion of the Australia Scaling Test), students may also receive a Tertiary Entrance Statement, which contains their Universities Admission Index (U.A.I.). The U.A.I. is used by universities throughout Australia for entry selection and it may also be used for entrance to universities throughout the world.
