International School Suva

From the Principal

International School Suva offers not only an excellent education but also a caring and nurturing environment for young people. It is truly an international school with over thirty different countries represented.
The International School Suva prepares students with the skills necessary to be both positive members of their communities and responsible global citizens. It offers a broad balanced curriculum with an emphasis on skills and processes, which enable students to transfer and adapt to new situations. The school aims to develop values in children, which are appropriate to a multi-cultural and rapidly changing world, in particular, respect and understanding for other people's ideas, language and beliefs.
Students are encouraged to take an active role in sports and the wide range of extra curricular activities which are offered at lunchtime and after school. The school is renowned for its creative and performing arts. Students take part in the annual Rock Challenge, Tadra Kahani (an inter-school cultural competition) and Art Exhibitions (both in school and within the community). Whole school Assemblies celebrate the many national days and this is an excellent opportunity for the students to not only display their own culture but to also learn about the different countries represented within the school.
Field trips are conducted in most subjects and these are an excellent opportunity for students to learn about Fiji and experience the educational environment outside the class room. Camps are held every second year in upper primary and secondary classes. These are a wonderful experience for children from different countries; to learn about Fiji’s fascinating culture, to learn leadership skills and how to co-operate with each other. Many friendships are formed as a result of the camps.
The International School Suva supports the International Baccalaureate philosophy which encourages the education of the whole person. The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) forms the framework for the primary curriculum at ISS. The programme addresses the social, physical, emotional and cultural wellbeing of the developing child and establishes a foundation for life long learning.
International School Suva is a friendly school where students are given the opportunity to receive a top quality education in a multi-cultural environment. It is an experience that they will value for the rest of their lives.

International School Suva offers worldwide recognized curriculum which include the International Baccalaureate Programmes for Primary, Middle and Senior school studies. It offers the University of Cambridge International Examinations (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) and the Australian Capital Territory (A.C.T.) Year 12 Certificate.

The IB Primary Years Programme is developed for ages 3 to 12. It addresses the social, physical, emotional and cultural well being of the developing child and establishes a foundation for life long learning. The programme encourages a positive attitude to learning through the development of skills, attitudes, actions and knowledge acquisition expressed in the student learning outcomes. These require the students to become excellent inquirers, communicators and risk-takers, as well as caring, balanced, reflective, skillful, open-minded, knowledgeable and principled young people.

The IB Middle Years Programme is a course of study designed to meet the educational requirements of students aged 11 to 16, who are enrolled in Years 6 – 10. Its philosophy and methodology specifically suit students in the middle years and it provides a natural progression from Primary school through to the International Baccalaureate Diploma at senior secondary level. At International School Suva, the basis for the MYP curriculum is the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) conducted by the University of Cambridge International Examinations Centre. The IGCSE is offered in over 124 countries worldwide. It is an internationally recognized qualification for 14 to 16 year olds. The IGCSE provides a wide curriculum specifically catering to the needs of an international community with an assessment system appropriate for students of all abilities. It is a two year programme leading to a Certificate, which is internationally recognized. In order for students to be awarded the IGCSE Certificate, students must take the final examinations that are externally set and graded.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a rigorous pre-university course for students between the ages of 16 and 19 years. The IB Diploma is offered in the final two years of high school. The focus of the programme is the education of the whole person, encouraging and facilitating the development of individuals who are able to act responsibly in all aspects of life within a complex global society. To that end, its educational philosophy is based on the combination of the principles of: Enquiry-based learning, Academic rigour and Critical thinking. Students take six subjects: First Language (e.g. English, Chinese, Russian or Korean), a Second modern Language, History, Geography, Business Management, IT; Physics, Chemistry, Biology; Mathematics, Arts or Electives. Other requirements of the IB Diploma are: Theory of Knowledge - which is an inter-disciplinary course that encourages students to critically reflect on knowledge gained inside and outside the classroom, a Creativity, Action and Service programme, an Extended Essay which requires students to do some original research and to write a 4000 word essay of the student’s own choice.

Students in Years 11 and 12 may also qualify for the Australian Capital Territory (A.C.T.) Year 12 Certificate. With an appropriate choice of subjects and completion of the Australia Scaling Test), students may also receive a Tertiary Entrance Statement, which contains their Universities Admission Index (U.A.I.). The U.A.I. is used by universities throughout Australia for entry selection and it may also be used for entrance to universities throughout the world.
